The latest updates for Thunderbird for Android and K-9 Mail have been released, bringing a range of improvements and bug fixes. The K-9 Mail Android email client is soon to be rebranded as Thunderbird for Android.

The updates include improvements to account setup, purging of old code, and fixes for OAuth 2.0 for Yahoo and AOL. The new and improved account setup code has been a focus, with efforts made to fix bugs and improve the internal architecture, making the code easier to maintain in the future.

Features Roadmap

  • Account setup using Thunderbird account auto-configuration.

  • Improved folder management.

  • Support for message filters.

  • Syncing between desktop and mobile Thunderbird.

In addition to these improvements, the update also includes the addition of content descriptions for various icons in the message header and the use of theme background color in message view and compose screens.

However, it's important to note that no beta or stable versions were released in September. Usually, a couple of beta releases are published each month. The main features of the next stable release will likely include "swipe between messages" and "swipe to action" in the message list.

Ultimately, K-9 Mail will transform into Thunderbird on Android. That means the name itself will change and adopt Thunderbird branding. Before that happens, we need to reach certain development milestones that will bring K-9 Mail into alignment with Thunderbird’s feature set and visual appearance. To accomplish that, we’ll devote finances and development time to continually improving K-9 Mail. We’ll be adding brand new features and introducing quality-of-life enhancements.
