The Leica M11 Monochrom

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

A Monochrome Marvel for the Modern Age

The Leica M11 Monochrom is a unique camera that finds a perfect blend between tradition and modernity, merging classic German engineering with contemporary digital technology. At first glance, this camera appears to be a throwback to a simpler era, featuring a design largely unchanged since the introduction of the Leica M series nearly seventy years ago. Yet, it cleverly conceals state-of-the-art features such as the rear touch screen and USB-C port, preserving the charm of old-school film photography in a digital package.

Standout Features

The Leica M11 Monochrom is specifically designed for black-and-white photography, boasting a dedicated black-and-white sensor that captures images with rich tone and texture. This specialized sensor records luminosity in delightful shades of gray, free of any color hint, offering a unique way of capturing the world.

The camera is equipped with a bright optical viewfinder and is compatible with M lenses. It also boasts a dust- and splash-resistant build, making it a sturdy companion for your photography adventures. The Leica M11 Monochrom weighs only 1.2 lb and has dimensions of 3.2 by 5.5 by 1.2 inches, making it compact and easy to handle.

Aesthetic and Design

The M11 Monochrom sports an entirely monochromatic exterior, devoid of the typical red accents found on Leica cameras. This results in a discreet look that adds to its allure, making it a perfect companion for street photography. The compact design and reduced weight of the M11 Monochrom, due to its matte black and aluminum top plate, make it an ideal travel camera.

The M11 Monochrom has a fixed bottom plate, unlike the removable one found on its predecessors. This new design allows for easier access to the battery and card slots and enables you to charge or connect the camera through a USB-C port.

Performance and User Experience

The Leica M11 Monochrom offers a very efficient and simple menu interface, which can be navigated easily with just three buttons on the back of the camera. Most functions can be adjusted quickly, enabling users to have full control with minimum clutter.

Despite the camera's compact form, Leica has not compromised on build quality. The rangefinder is highly accurate even with wide-aperture lenses, and the viewfinder optics are bright and easy to see through. The high-resolution back LCD panel allows for a high rate of magnification to evaluate images. However, the lack of an articulating screen is noticeable, especially when attempting low-angle shots.

Image Quality and Storage

The M11 Monochrom is capable of capturing spectacular monochromatic images with excellent quality. By removing the Color Filter Array located in front of the sensor, the camera gains roughly 1 EV of extra light, resulting in improved image quality and a base ISO of 125. The appearance of image-degrading noise is lower than one would find on other cameras with similar sensors.

Moreover, the M11 Monochrom expands on the built-in memory of its predecessor, from 64GB to a staggering 256GB. This not only provides a safety net in case of memory card emergencies but also allows the photographer to shoot for days without a memory card at all.
